Mangga (Mango)
Mangga
(Mangifera indica L.) is a fruit tree that can be seen throughout the entire Philippines. It is the national fruit of the Philippines.
Most of them are planted and cultivated on Mt.
Banahaw. It is an edible
fruit that makes wonderful landscapes in the farms. They usually a fast growing
trees to about 60-65ft. Some Mango trees can live over 200 - 300 years and
still bears a fruits. Usually mango leaves are dark green, oblong or
roundish-oblong in shape. Its fruits are irregularly egg-shaped and slightly
compressed large fleshy drupes. It varies considerably in size, shape, color,
presence of fiber, flavor, taste and several other characters depending on
its variety. The flowers are yellow and as often as long as its leaves.
Both ripe and unripe mango fruits also used in making juices, "mango shakes" which is very refreshing during summer. Can be added to flavor an ice cream, candies, breads and some of Philippine delicacies like paksiw and kinilaw.
The leaves are used in treatment of diabetes, for chronic
diseases of the lungs, for asthma and colds. The flowers are used in handling diarrhea.
The ripe fruit is said to be diuretic, laxative, and useful for constipation.
The seed (pit/stone) of Manga is used for diarrhea and is considered
anthelmintic and can treat round worm.
